I know what you mean. I cannot see any of the hills that surround the South Bay either. And the smoke does bother my eyes and throat quite a bit.
I am also really concerned about the lightning strikes. Unfortunately, there's still a chance for dry lightning according to the forecast.

This is so true! I live right at the western side of the Altamont Hills and the sky is so smokey and hazy that from my house I can't see the forest of windmills on the hilltops that I normally do. My daughter and baby grandson had to drive down from Chico to Stanford Children's hospital on Wednesday and she said it was awful the entire way...Palo Alto's air was no better. Let's hope we don't get more lightning strikes, as the grass is so very dry.

Hey photozilla, good points. Of course, most of the food contaminations originate where the end-consumer can't do much about the sanitary conditions. Unless, of course, we all start growing our own food.
And canned or preserved food are always an option, but who can it only that stuff. To me at least, it doesn't taste as good as fresh most of the time.

Just read an interesting article in the Mercury News (http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_9560827?source=most_viewed)
Apparently, there are ways to at least limit food contaminations such as the current one:

"More inspections at packing facilities, says Hanson of the Center for Food Safety. He also believes government and industry should do more to make sure that animal manure, sometimes used as fertilizer, is composted to prevent the spread of salmonella."

The solution seems obvious doesn't it?

e-coli: Don't crap where you harvest, store food or eat. Some cultures seem to have a problem with basic sanitary requirements but we shouldn't.

Salmonella: Keep food fresh and store it where it stays fresh. As I understand it, those buggers need some time to multiply.

Another way would be to eat canned or preserved food. Enough preservatives will kill any organism.
